Crashes Involving Motorcycles Carry Hidden Consequences

A little know section of traffic law can cause big trouble.

A violation of N.C.G.S. 20-154(a), unsafe movement, a crash causing more than $5000 in property damage or serious bodily injury to a person operating or riding on a motorcycle, requires a minimum fine of $750. Under the statute, a judge may also suspend the defendant’s license (and grant a limited privilege) for up to 30 days. A violation of section (a1), causing a motorcyclist to change or leave an intended travel lane, carries a $200 minimum fine.
